March 19 thru March 23, 2015

Current:
Thanks to Rachael and Stu for hosting the Olympia Farewell Tour! It was great seeing the two of you and Mark and Hannele (and meeting Brian). And getting reacquainted with Keith, Cindy, and Bill after 30+ years!

On the way back from Olympia, I crossed over Medicine Creek. Further upstream from I-5 is the place where the treaty was signed that resulted in the Boldt Decision, which had a significant impact on my chosen field of fisheries here in Washington.

Thanks to Mary Ellen and Michael for hosting the Diversity Diner Farewell Tour! And thanks to Michael for the red potatoes with garlic & rosemary, to Amelia for Hyon's kim chee pancakes, to Mary Ellen for the pineapple upside down cake and blueberry cobbler, and to Janet for the baklava! And to everyone who shared about what community means to them!

03/19/15 In Hawai'i Now
Brought Mom back home after a week-long visit in Washington. Landed about 2:30 pm after a 2-hour delay in Seattle for a repair, then 30 minute delay due to headwinds.  About halfway through the trip here's what it looked like outside at 36,000 feet.
You know its cold when ...

03/20/15 Task #1 Fix the Doorbell
Our first task was to fix the broken doorbell.  We were able to easily talk Mom in to a wireless system that also had 2 entry sensor alarms since the dementia has made her a little paranoid about people coming in and taking things. However, the truth is we installed them so if she begins to wander we will be able to tell if she has gone out either of the doors. (If she goes out the sliding glass door she will not be able to get out of the cat run.)

03/21/15 Task #2 for Tallest Grandkid
When the tallest grandkid visits he gets the special jobs - like changing light bulbs! Neither Mom nor Dad are comfortable standing on anything to do chores like this. Here's Kai standing on the bed and changing the bulbs in Mom and Dad’s bedroom.
How many geeks does it take to change a light bulb?

Went to my high school’s foundation fund raiser dinner tonight.  Found out they now have a program for performing arts. Ukulele star Jake Shimabukuro is a 1994 graduate of my high school, as well as Greg Sardinha, Mike Kaawa, Randy Borden, and more. My friend Lois, who was teaching there when Jake was a student, says he always had his ukulele with him and could be heard playing whenever he was not in class. They showcased a couple of singers this evening, one of the young ladies (a sophomore) has a great voice - wish I could remember her name now!

03/22/15 Historic Homes
We had to change Mom’s walking route. The first block on her original route has no sidewalks and it is difficult for pedestrians to be safe if drivers are going faster than the posted speed.  It also is slightly uphill to start then a downhill to end. The new route is fairly level and dead ends at where it is intersected by the freeway so she can’t get too lost. Saw 2 historic houses along the way (Hawaiian style bungalows).  Here's one of them with the really cool (and colorful!) plaque identifying its status.

Went to the Honolulu Museum of Art today; it was called the Honolulu Academy of Arts when I was in grade school. It’s mission is to make art accessible to local students so, according to the docent, they “have one of everything”.  Saw Georgia O’Keeffe, Diego Rivera, Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, Gauguin, Matisse, Toulouse-Lautrec, Rembrandt, Manet, ancient Egyptian & Hawaiian artifacts, Chinese scrolls, Japanese woodblock prints, Buddhas from all parts of the world and of different ages, and much more. The most pieces of any one artist were 3 by Georgia O’Keefe (landscapes and a papaya tree done during her 90 day visit to Hawai’i).  Got to see only a small fraction of their collection; I am now a supporting member and will be back again!

03/23/15 Task #3 and Honu Mailbox
The wooden bifold closet doors in the family room were binding when Mom tried to open them. Got a tube of graphite, they’re working better now but one of them is a little warped so when it closes it doesn’t quite meet like its supposed to.

Saw a cool mailbox on Mom's walk this morning. It had a honu (sea turtle) motif painted on it.  It is apparently done by a company called Tree Guards Hawaii. (Tree guards are wide sheet metal collars installed on coconut tree trunks to keep rats from climbing up the trees and nesting in them.)  They have a bunch of other designs that they paint on tree guards and mailboxes.
