November 27, 2014, thru November 30, 2014

Current:
Here's the photo of some of the Port Gardner Bay Watercolor Society members. This group is not for everyone. There are no membership requirements, no membership fees, no officers, no bylaws; the only structure is getting together Monday evening at the retirement residence (they consider PGBWS an amenity). Some people can't handle the lack of rules and leave! That's not to say we are not good artists; we have all had works juried in to shows, won awards, and even sold original pieces. We just like to get together to paint, talk, and support each other in our artwork and don't need a formal structure to do that. I am going to miss them. (But we are already talking about a Hawai'ian plein air get together!)

When I visited Aunty Florence last week to give her my big pots of strawberry plants and saffron crocus, she showed me this very interesting plant that was in a flower arrangement she had been given weeks ago. There are little flowers sprouting from the center of the underside of the leaf! I finally figured out what it was today. It is called mouse thorn, spineless butcher's broom, or horse tongue lily. I hope she is able to get it to root and grow.

Momo the Escape Artist is still on the lam. Tonight I was very good at giving Mom step-by-step instructions to go outside and check if Momo was around and leave food out for him. Shiro tried to go outside with Mom to find Momo, but he was thwarted by our careful planning.

Happy Birthday to Anastasia, Alejandro, and Dave!

11/27/2014 Birthday Surprise for Dad!
The surprise was a success! Since Mom and Dad normally go to Curt and Lori's for Thanksgiving they did not suspect a thing. Curt met us outside, under the pretense of just having brought the rubbish out, and suggested we enter through the garage. The door opened and "SURPRISE!" Aunty Florence and Uncle Orv and their family had gone to Kohala first; they arrived in Honolulu this morning and went straight to Curt's house to help with preparations. Kai rode in Bick and Ron's car so he could call Uncle Curtis and let him know when we got off the freeway. In all there were about 30 people there; here's a photo of immediate family members.
Front row: Ursula, Justine, Mia, Eden; 2nd row: Florence (Mom's sister), Mom, Dad, Judy (Mom's sister); standing: Curtis (my brother), DT (Curtis' older son), Tomiko (Florence's younger daughter, taker of the Kohala house photos), me, Karen (Florence's older daughter, mother of Ursula & Justine), Kai, Brent (Curtis' younger son), Russell (Judy's older son, father of Mia), & Aimee (Judy's daughter, mother of Eden) (photo by Bick)

Dad also got a special visit from the guy that bought his 1967 Cougar five years ago and has been working on restoring it. (I learned how to drive in this car.)

11/28/2014 Breakfast Fruit Bowl
Most mornings breakfast started with fruit. Justine and Ursula brought some fruits back from Lem's house that we added to our usual mix. The moutain apple and dragonfruit are from Lem's house; the jabon is from Mom and Dad's house.
Here's what's in the bowl (* = homegrown): persimmon, pineapple, jabon* (aka pomelo), mountain apple*, papaya, dragonfruit*, and dried blueberries

Aunty Daisy arrived today from Chicago by herself.  She also has dementia. She is staying with Aunty Judy until the 30th, then she will come to spend a couple days with Mom and Dad.

11/29/2014 Photo Albums
For Dad's birthday Lori made a game using old photos. Sarah, David, and Kai went through these old photo albums to get pictures for the surprise birthday celebration. This also gave them an opportunity to learn a little more about the family. This is only about 1/3 of the albums, which are slowly being scanned. I put the labels on to make finding specific events easier.

11/30/2014 Birdbath
Since Dad's morning routine is to sit out front and feed the birds we got him a birdbath with a solar water fountain for his birthday.

Aunty Judy brought Aunty Daisy over to stay with Mom and Dad for a few days. In the evening, while Kai was asleep on the living room couch (there were no other beds), Mom and Aunty Daisy walked in to the living room and turned on the lights, oblivious to his presence; he turned over and put the pillow over his head. Kai said they talked about some things on the shelves for the next couple hours, and every 20 minutes or so the conversation would start all over again. He got to where he knew what they were going to say! He just let them continue with their conversation until they left; he knew they couldn't really control what they were doing.
