Haleiwa Staycation

I spent a few hours today with Mom's friends Evelyn & Mary Jane. I picked Mary Jane up at about 10 & we headed to Haleiwa to Evelyn's house. Mom met Evelyn & Mary Jane through the 442nd K Company monthly breakfasts that all their husbands attended at the old Kenny's Restaurant. After Kenny's closed a few years ago, the group stopped meeting. Evelyn & Mary Jane lost touch with most everyone except Mom; none of them drove much so the 3 of them kept in touch by phone. They weren't able to make it to Mom's memorial so I took my laptop and shared the PowerPoint show that we created to show during the visitation; they appreciated it. We'll be getting together again.

Evelyn prefers to go to places to avoid where the bulk of the tourists are milling around Haleiwa town. For lunch she directed us to a small place called Sprout Sandwich Shop at the south end of Haleiwa on Kamehameha Highway.

Carrie, Sydney, & Nani made a great bunch of sandwiches for us! Evelyn & Mary Jane had The Floater and I had The Crater. I also discovered that they have a shop in Kaimuki, about 4 minutes from the house! I'll be checking out the place in Kaimuki to see if they can make sandwiches as good as Carrie, Sydney, & Nani!
The Crater; it's like a BLT with chipotle mayo.

On the wall of Sprout was an amazing photo of Kapoho, with the volcano erupting in the background; which I hadn't noticed until Carrie pointed it out. Then I realized we had a photo of us kids taken with the remains of one of the buildings in the photo.

Sprout is in a row of buildings with a parking lot in the back. The parking lot had some interesting landscaping: falling mangoes. Not sure how good they are, there were a lot on the ground. But that might also be a function of the tree being too tall to harvest easily; which is why I'm working with Aikane to keep the fruit trees at the Kohala house short enough to harvest easily.
Yummm! Mango squash!

Just before I went to bed last night I watched Shiro prove, once again, that he is the smartest cat in the house. Shiro is on a special diet because his kidneys are starting to fail; he has his own special feeder that no one else can access. Xander & Chibi have a special diet to help them with their digestion; it is also in a special feeder. The feeders are linked to RFID tags that the cats wear; Shiro's tag monitors how much he eats of his food and triggers the other feeder to shut if his tag gets too close. Xander & Chibi's tags do the same for their feeder. Last night I watched Shiro sit next to Xander & Chibi's feeder, reach in with his paw, snag a few pieces of kibble, and eat them outside of the feeder! He kept his tag far enough away that it didn't trigger the feeder to close.

Happy Birthday to Susie, Leanna, Seyda, & me!
