Unsalted and Shark Free

We went to Lake Superior today; it is so large it looks like the ocean. You can't see land on the other side, there are waves on it. Sometimes the waves are large enough to sink a large ship, like the Edmund Fitzgerald; Margaret & Kai were talking about that on the way to see the lake.

On the way out to the lake, we stopped at Victoria, an old copper mining town. It reminded me of Silverton, an old silver mining town on the Mountain Loop Highway in Washington.

The sign that Kai & Margaret were reading.

Checking out some of the other structures.
We looked in the windows and saw this in one cabin.
This was a Finnish settlement, the first thing they built was the sauna.
Inside the sauna.

We also did a short hike and saw Lake of the Clouds.

On the way back we stopped for ice cream at Porcupine Mountain Outpost State Park Store.

You could ride a bike to the End of the Earth.

Then we had lunch in Rockland at Henry's Inn; during snowmobile season it is packed with "berry pickers", the local term for non-residents. But today there were only a handful of people when we arrived.

Grilled Chicken Grande.

Our waitress Leona, had a bunch of tattoos on both arms. I asked her to select her favorites; she said that was like asking who your favorite child was; but she did choose these 2.

We also made a stop at Rob's nearby property, affectionately known as The Camp. I was expecting something much smaller and more rustic. It looks to be larger than my house in Washington, has gas & battery-powered lights, a gas stove, and a gas refrigerator. One bedroom has a full-sized bed, the other has bunk beds. There is a wrap-around deck with a view down to the creek. Tonight Kai is spending the night out at The Camp with Brian.

For breakfast Margaret made blueberry pancakes, ham, and eggs. For dinner, she heated up pasties; a Finnish meat & vegetable filled pastry that is found in this area of Michigan. These were from Rob; he left directions NOT to heat them in the microwave, USE the oven. So we did. It was delicious!

Almost forgot to take a photo of it!

In the evening I helped Margaret water the plants and feed the chickens.

Yesterday I erroneously said it took us 5 hours to get to Bruce Crossing. It was actually only 4 hours; there is a time zone change between Watersmeet and Paulding A weird time zone change; the boundary runs easr-west instead of north-south. Which means that Green Bay, which is geographically further east than Bruce Crossing, is one time zone behind in the Central Time Zone, while Bruce Crossing is in the Eastern Time Zone. In the morning Brian leaves the house at 6:30 am, drives one hour to go to work, and gets there at 6:30 am!
Notice the horizontal time zone line.

I had a text from The Roommates, "Shrimp collars still works" [sic] I texted back, "Shrimp collars?" and got a phone call. Apparently The Roommates took the old carpet out of the family room, but accidentally unplugged the Wireless Whiskers feeders while doing so. They wanted to know if the feeders needed to be reset in order to work. The time sort of does, if its not reset the 24-hour clock just starts at a different time. But the Daily Allowance does not need to be reset, it remains the same as before the power went out. Shiro autocorrected to Shrimp.

Happy Birthday to Steve!
