New Floor, Day 1

I forgot to post a photo of why we are changing the carpet. This carpet is almost 50 years old. Mom would cover the worn spots with little braided rugs or plastic carpet runners. She did not want to pack everything up so that the furniture could be moved. The closest she got was asking me to get some small boxes, she never made a move to start packing.

Joe & Ikaika from Abbey Carpet & Flooring showed up this morning and got to work moving the remaining things out of the rooms. That took them about 30 minutes; then they started on removing the old carpet. They weren't concerned at all about the wet carpet.
They were at this stage about 30 minutes after starting.
They hauled all the old carpet away.
About an hour later, all the carpet was gone!
Xander kept wanting to come in, Chibi was hunkered down under the lowest shelf, Shiro was sleeping on his favorite shelf.

Then they began removing all the tack strips along the edge of the carpet and started sanding the floor. Apparently the floor has a lot of dips and high spots. In the meanwhile, all the kitties, including Xander, were now napping in the cat run.

After sanding, they applied a thin layer of Portland cement floor patch and skim coat. It fills in the low spots. They put a fan on to speed up the drying; the cats need to stay out until it is dry.
Applying the skim coat.
The skim coat in the living room.

They only applied the skim coat to the living room floor today. They will work on grinding the floors in the other rooms and applying the skim coat tomorrow. Here's what they looked like at the end of the day today.

The cats could tell that they had left and wanted to get in.

This morning when I woke up I was surrounded by cats!
Shiro was sleeping on my right side.
Chibi slept at the foot of the cot where my feet don't reach.
And Xander jumped up on the cot and walked on me to wake me up to get his meds, which I give him along with treats.

It's Tuesday! But we didn't go out to breakfast this morning because they restarted construction on Curtis' remodel. This was the first day they were working in the house so Curtis wanted to be there to get them started. He said, "Started the roofing. Big trusses coming tomorrow and will require a crane to lift over the house to the back yard. ... Made another ... payment today so my Home equity loan is now more than my original first mortgage when I bought the house."

Happy Birthday to Lisa!
