Vanco Drip

Dad is now on vancomycin, it is administered intravenously every 12 hours. There is an IV stand with a pump now located in his room. This morning it looked like the redness  on his lower leg had spread a little farther. The outside of his upper leg looked less red but the inside looked redder. Dad still says it is not sore. Tomorrow they do a blood draw to get some information about what's happening.

My morning walk was pleasant; it was not muggy and there was a light breeze. While I was walking I saw Calvin the Recycler below the park. During my cool down stretches I saw Ken with the early-rising dogs, Lorraine, Lori from the dog pack, and Caroline & Olive go by.
Twenty minutes before sunrise on Waiʻalae.
Nine minutes before sunrise on Maunalani.
Eight minutes past sunrise on Sierra.
Surf's up!

Dad had breakfast in bed; he ate all of his fried egg sandwich and papaya. He drank only 120 ml of apple juice but no water.

During my mid-morning walk I saw LaVie & Kila. They were just starting up on Maunalani Circle, so I walked with them up to the driveway. In order to give Kila more exercise, LaVie walked down to the entry door with me. We talked about how good a therapy dog Kila would be because she is so mellow.

Lunch today was Pork tofu, Steamed rice, Stir fry vegetable blend, Tossed salad, Caramel cheesecake, and Garden vegetable soup. There were no stir fry vegetables on my plate and there were a whole lot of mushrooms in the vegetable soup. Dad ate all of his 1/2 peanut butter & banana sandwich and 2 desserts but he drank hardly any apple juice or water.

I skipped the afternoon walk, I wanted to be there when Curtis arrived so I could fill him in on everything going on with Dad. Plus I wanted to let him know about Mr. Pires and Mr. Yamada's service & interment.

I saw Sleepy Cat and Shy Cat in front of Mikeʻs house during my morning walk. After I took their photo I realized that Sleepy Cat had been eating a bird for breakfast! Later, during my mid-morning walk, I got a closer look at the bird; it was an ʻEhakō (Spotted Dove). The question is, was the ʻEhakō hit by a car, then Sleepy Cat came in for the free food? Or did Sleepy Cat actually hunt & catch the ʻEhakō?

Calvin helped me pick papayas this afternoon. When people help me I have them stand below as I toss papayas to them. That way I donʻt have to haul a full bag of papayas down in one hand while hanging on to the ladder with the other hand. There were 13 of them; several were ripe, I should have picked them last Friday. I gave a couple to Calvin along with a couple of mangoes.

We took Calvin out for dinner tonight since this was his last night with us. He moves to the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service bunkhouse later tonight. We went to Kim Chee II.

After dinner we went to Pipeline Bakery & Creamery. We had a bunch of different things including a Malamode and an M&M Cookie.

Look, no paper! But its Sunday, this is the only day that I wanted them to deliver the paper. Aue!

Changing Weather

It has been pleasantly cloudy these last couple of days; a much needed break from the record setting high temperatures we had the last few weeks. This morning was also cloudy; I loved it! I saw Wendy, Bella, & Mickey during my walk. Later during my cool down stretches I saw Ona jogging by twice! May be I should do that once a week also? May be only once around the circle, which would give me 0.4 miles of jogging. Slowly. I'll have to think about this.
Sixteen minutes before sunrise on Waiʻalae.
Six minutes before sunrise on Maunalani.
Ten minutes after sunrise on Sierra.

Dad was eating breakfast in bed when I arrived. Today he ate half his fried egg sandwich, all of his papaya and saved his apple banana for later. He drank 120 ml cranberry juice and 60 ml water.

When I looked out the window about half an hour before my mid-morning walk it was apparent we were changing back to the hot weather. There were less clouds and more blue sky. My walk started out with a nice breeze under a shadow from a cloud. As I was coming up to the top of Lurline, I saw Suzette out by the garage so I went over to talk to her. I had not seen her in a while but had noticed her car gone early in the morning, returning in the afternoon; it looked like she was back at work. And she was! But yesterday she was a little under the weather so that's why I saw her return early. We had a great conversation! While we were talking, Glenn came by with Cinder; I originally met him back in October when he was walking their other dog Cooper who is deaf. I did a whopping 0.64 miles! All total I was gone for 43 minutes but only walked for 12 of those minutes, but it was worth it to see that Suzette was doing well.

Lunch today was Saucy cabbage roll, Steamed rice, Sauteed herbed zucchini, Tossed salad, Mandarin orange cake, and Broccoli cheese soup. My tray arrived without the soup. Dad ate all of his 1/2 peanut butter & banana sandwich but only half of one piece of cake. He drank 60 ml cranberry juice and 40 ml water.

Dad's cellulitis is still giving him a low grade fever, its been hovering about 99.5 F yesterday & today. It has made him lethargic; he is sleeping even more than he usually does. The redness seems to have spread a little, previously it was only on the back of his left thigh, today part of the the front of his thigh is red as well as the top of his lower leg. Dr. Greis said the antibiotic would take 48 hours to build up to therapeutic levels; that will be later this evening so we will see what it looks like tomorrow.
LPN Chivas measures the red portion below Dad's knee cap.

Apparently Dad's roommate, Mr. Pires, went to the hospital on Thursday after I left. I had not seen him yesterday when I left about noon and had not seen him this morning. I thought he had just gotten out of bed early and was in the dining room or at the nurses station! All of his things are here and his name is still on the door so I was not clued in that anything might be amiss.

I skipped the afternoon walk. LPN Chivas was planning on coming back to check out Dad's leg so I wanted to be present when he did. Things looked the same so I left at my regular time. Later, when I was running errands, RN Sierra called. Dr. Greis had changed the antibiotic; they were going to start Dad on vancomycin which needed to be done intravenously.

Here's what the downspout discharge area looks like when it is really sunny and dry.

Honoring a Veteran

Today was Mr. Yamada's interment at Puowaina, aka National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. He is in Court 13, which is where Mom is; Mr. Yamada is in Wall G, Mom is in Wall A.
Mrs. Yamada receives the flag.
Mr. Yamada's ashes being placed in the niche.
Chaplain Carlton leads the prayer.
The technician takes a GPS reading for Mr. Yamada's final resting place.

Shirley & Brian invited me to join the family for lunch at Nice Day Chinese Restaurant, so I did. The food was great but like last night, there was more than we could eat; I took a bunch home for the roommates. We now have some cake noodles, mapo tofu, sweet & sour pork, and green beans.

Before we left Puowaina they went to place flowers at Guy's father's niche. While on our way there, I pointed out Uncle Art's niche and Guy said "Do you know Russell?"It turns out Russell's wife Paula is Guy's cousin! Small world! This is the reason why I try to be nice to everyone I meet; you never know how you may be connected to someone.

I forgot to mention the wonderful food after Mr. Yamada's memorial last night. But there was so much left over they sent people home with food. I had grabbed some chicken, furikake fish, sushi, mac salad, andagi, and manju; Shirley came over and gave me more including a container of wasabi mayo for the fish. I texted the Roommates & Calvin about it when I got home; they came out to check it out & eat dinner.

I also forgot to mention that I got a call from Maunalani while I was at the reception following the memorial. Dad has developed a fever and a red swollen spot on the back of his left thigh; they believe it is cellulitis. Dad is being treated with clindamycin; they'll monitor it & treat accordingly. I got a look at it today; it looks like it must be sore but Dad didn't complain about it.

It was still overcast so my morning walk was not too hot but it was muggy; there was very little breeze. I only saw Ona in the distance walking up Sierra as I was completing my walk. I didn't see any regulars during my cool down stretches either.
Eighteen minutes before sunrise on Waiʻalae.
Seven minutes before sunrise on Maunalani.
Eight minutes after sunrise on Sierra.
I think this centipede fried on the road.

CNA Sharmaine was trimming Dad's fingernails when I arrived. For breakfast he ate about 1/4 of his fried egg sandwich and all of the papaya & apple banana. He drank 120 ml cranberry juice and 60 ml water.

My mid-morning walk was overcast like the morning walk. It was also muggy and without a breeze. I didn't see any of the regulars.

I used a different angle for the photo of the downspout area. Less of the split AC compressors are visible so the light reflecting off of them doesn't skew the balance of the photo.

I skipped lunch today; the main dish was chicken long rice which I wouldn't be eating anyway. Plus I was leaving right after I got Dad started with lunch in order to go to Mr. Yamada's interment. I wanted to pick up flowers to put at Mom's niche since I was going to be nearby but I left Maunalani a little later than I had planned so I did not have enough time to get flowers.

I had been hearing something quietly knocking around at night over the last few nights. Today I discovered that the shed door was wide open! I had checked the backyard before and had not seen it open; it must have gotten blown open recently. I locked it up, hopefully that gets rid of the noise Iʻve been hearing.

Good Bye, Mr. Yamada!

Mr. Yamada's memorial was this evening. It was good to see Mrs. Yamada, Shirley & Guy, and Brian & Cindy & their sons again. Found out how kolohe Mr. Yamada was as a young man! I met Shirley & Guy's neighbors Lance & his mother Halcyon; Lance & I had a great conversation about caring for aging parents. Tomorrow is Mr. Yamada's interment at Puowaina; I plan on being there.

I saw a lot of regulars during my morning walk today; I think its because the weather has settled down & dried out. During my morning walk, I saw Romeo & Karpo, Cody & Rollie & their human, Calvin the Recycler, and Mary. Later I saw Kelly & Abby about a block ahead of me as I made my way up Lurline. During my cool down stretches I saw Ona & Rio. I also saw the White Cockatoo fly from near the park towards Michael & Spike's house but I could not see where it actually ended up landing.
Eighteen minutes before sunrise on Waiʻalae.
Seven minutes before sunrise on Maunalani.
Ten minutes after sunrise on Sierra.

Dad was just getting up when I got to his room. He decided to eat breakfast in bed; his roommate Mr. Pires also stayed in bed for breakfast. Dad ate everything this morning; a fried egg sandwich, papaya, and a banana. He also drank 120 ml apple juice and 60 ml water.

When I looked out the window before my mid-morning walk it looked like it wanted to rain. But it didn't; it stayed nice & dry the whole walk. And it was also less muggy since it wasn't as hot as it has been. Then during my cool down stretches it began to very lightly drizzle!

Lunch today was Meat jun, Steamed Rice, Steamed corn, Tossed salad, Brownie, and Chicken jook. Dad ate all of his 1/2 peanut butter & banana sandwich and 2 brownies; he drank 120 ml apple juice but no water.

I donʻt eat the carb-rich parts of the meal. The empty green plate is from Dadʻs lunch.

I skipped the afternoon walk; I was having difficulties accessing 2 on-line applications that I started for Kai and forgot about the time. Since I was planning to go to Mr. Yamada's memorial I did not have time to do my walk and get home to get ready for his memorial without too much rushing around. I spent the rest of the time updating my spreadsheet of things I need to do. I really need to print a hard copy and hang it on my door so it is in front of me all the time!

I discovered I can open the window and stick my phone out through the openings in the screen that allow you reach out to grab the window to close it, and take a photo of the downspout discharge area. I just have to be careful not to drop my phone in to the water since the LifeProof case is no longer waterproof and I can't get another case to fit my phone since its so old. Here's what it looks like sort of dry and when there is a light drizzle.
