Cleaning Out the Dining Room

We started going through things in the dining room. Sort of. The Potential Most Favorite Roommate moved a bunch of things into the living room to sort them out. Then he went outside to work on a bonsai that he is repotting and training. I pulled a couple things out of the pile that I want to take with me.

The main focus of today's clean up effort.
I also need to go through the cabinet.
Bonsai in progress.

I also checked out the pakalana; I will be making starts from the runners that are trying to root along the ground.

I heard from Evan about 6:30 this morning, he said tomorrow at 12 noon HI time/6 pm PA time was a good time for us to meet with Susan. When I was more awake later in the morning, I organized a Zoom meeting for Sarah & Evan to talk to Susan who was a student at Hawaiʻi Preparatory Academy. I think talking to her will answer a lot of questions that Evan might have about working there.

Today I made my 1st proothie in a while. I didn't make any while I was on Hawaiʻi Island. I only made 1 during some weekends while I was working at the LCC vaccine POD. This morning I made a beet green proothie with a few leaves of basil; I was great to have one again!

I sent Sarah a link to a 1 bedroom place in Laupāhoehoe just off the main road; it was originally an artist studio that was upgraded to a residence (with permits). It is $1500/mo, available June 15th, and a 45 minute drive to HPA. It's in a small cul-de-sac with about 5 other houses (besides the 1 on the lot that it is associated with).

A short while later Sarah sent me a link to a place she found in the sublet section of Craigslist, asking, "Tiny but possible?" I told her it was up to her & Evan whether it was possible for them to live in a 450 sq ft studio loft with an active child. I also told her it looked like the cabin was on the hillside above the highway through Laupāhoehoe, and if so, it was up a dirt road and would not be a 40 minute drive to Waimea. I'm pretty sure she was interested in it because they said, "built with sustainability in mind, supported by abundant solar power and rain water from the catchment. Perfect for the eco minded single person". She's not aware that almost all the houses on that hillside have no infrastructure supporting them so they need to provide their own power and water. I suggested if she was still interested in it, to ask for a street address, look it up on Google Maps, and also turn on the satellite image to see how far up the hill it is.

Is there a pot of gold in that cabin?

I reached 400 days of practicing ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi on Duolingo. I thought there was some sort of reward for it but I was mistaken. There is apparently only 1 at 365 days.

My daily goal is to practice for 20 "minutes."

The Aix weather app forecast a partly cloudy day with rain in the afternoon. It showed it mainly rainy in Kapaʻau.

The Canada-France-Hawaiʻi Telescope webcam at about 1:45 pm.

There were 30 new cases of COVID-19reported today, bringing the total known cases up to 36,276. There were no new deaths reported so the death toll remains at 500: currently 764 cases are considered active.

Plants & Repairs

This morning The Potential Most Favorite Roommate and I went to City Mill; he had an ʻŌhiʻa Lehua plant (Metrosideros polymorpha) on hold & I needed a replacement toilet seat and massaging showerhead. I also picked up a verified kupukupu fern (Nephrolepis cordifolia); this is the one I thought I had in Kohala but it turned out to be the non-native invasive.

He got 2; one on left will have more shrubby growth habit than one on right.

I did not realize there were so many different types of toilet seats. I found one with a potty training part and one with a night light! I settled on the Brevia which has quick attach hardware so it can be easily removed for more thorough cleaning. When I got home I discovered I had the wrong size. Auē!

The potty training toilet seat.
I guess this is so guy's have something to aim for in the middle of the night?
The winner!
This is what I had to match, there was no good fit.
But it's to long.
Here's a better comparison.

About 8:30 this morning Jessie called; she was concerned since Susan did not show up last night. Auē! I forgot to call & let her know Susan had some trouble getting her rental car so she would be delayed. Knowing that Susan was okay in Kona put her at ease. I called her back later in the afternoon after Susan was able to get her car and start heading to the house. All is now good in the neighborhood.

On the way back from City Mill, The Potential Most Favorite Roommate went through Waikīkī; he wanted to avoid all the traffic lights along the more standard route home from City Mill. I had not really driven around Waikīkī in a long time; I usually only go to the condo of The Most Excellent Cook and The Bronco Dude who live at the mauka edge of Waikīkī. I know its not true, but everything there seemed new to me. And it was pretty busy down on the beach. We also saw some ocean rescue action going on as we neared the Diamond Head end of Waikīkī. Whatever it was it did not make the news, I guess there were nearly a hundred rescues that they have already had to do over this holiday weekend.

All these responders were at the same incident.

I dropped off the veggies for Paris about noon. We had a nice little chat but decided we will try to get together later this week; she has a break from teaching school.

The Potential Most Favorite Roommate and The Roommate Who Likes to Wash Dishes switched our internet provider from Mom & Dadʻs name to theirs so that they could get a better deal. In the meanwhile, I set up my hotspot during the few hours when the old router was exchanged for the new router and the system was put back on line.

My trusty hotspot was 4 years old last Saturday.

For dinner I had salad and a couple of almond tortillas with cream cheese and guacamole. I only remembered to take a photo of the salad.

Sunday afternoon is always the end of the Duolingo challenge for the week. This week I ended up in #7 place. I don't get any special rewards for 7th place, but I don't get demoted down either.

The Aix weather app forecast a partly cloudy day for here in Honolulu. It seemed to be fairly correct.

With the addition of 1 new COVID-19 death reported today, we reached a dubious milestone; 500 total deaths. This is about 35 deaths per 100,000 residents, giving the state one of the lowest death rates in the nation. There were also 122 new cases reported for 32,246 total known cases; currently 810 cases are considered active. The 7-day new case average for Oʻahu is 31 with a positivity rate of 1.4%.
