Injured Bird Ubering

After we had the Motek Bakery breakfast special lox & bagels, we went to the Kona Airport to pick up 3 injured birds for the Hawaiʻi Wildlife Center. There were 2 Manu-o-Kū & a petrel.

Tonight I had a piece of my new source of lipids, the chocolate ganache pie with raspberry sauce from Libby! It was delicious!

Kai has been having a problem with beetles. These very tiny beetles are getting blown in from the vegetation in the cat yard & have been landing on him while he is lying on the bed. To prevent it from happening any further he has closed the windows on the easterly side of the room; which also means the prevailing breeze is blocked from entering the room. He would rather put up with the lack of wind than the beetles! 

I finished the readings for the 1st project we will be reviewing for the Leeward Planning Commission meeting on Thursday. It is a request for a 1 room bed & breakfast in an existing house. 

Initially, when I would bring Moʻo in at night, I would put her in her crate because she would chew on things. Since she would also chew on the door jambs it was not an option to just let her loose & keep things out of her reach. When she outgrew that I would let her loose while I was awake, then put her in her crate when I went to sleep. When I moved her crate out of the kitchen & in to the living room, I blocked off a small portion so she had the choice to sleep in her crate or out on the floor available to her; usually she chose the crate. After the neighbor confronted us in our driveway, Moʻo started jumping over the barrier to sleep in front of the front door; I took the the barrier down so she would not injure herself if she slipped while trying to get over it. She is now allowed to go wherever she wants after I go to sleep (except my bedroom); she is fulfilling her duties as a watchdog. Since Kai is using my desk in the cat room, I have my laptop set up at the kitchen table. When I am here, Moʻo frequently lies on the rug by the back door to keep an eye on me.

I spent about 20  minutes on Lingopie lessons today. In my morning lessons, I just reviewed words I had added to the flash cards earlier. I try to go through the review cards several times until I can get all 9 correct several times. 

I discovered there is an auto pause function on Lingopie; it automatically stops at the end of each caption. For today's viewing I only watched about 1 minute. After the Leeward Planning Commission is over for the month, I will try to spend the 7 minutes a day actually viewing the video as recommended by Lingopie.

 

I went back in Duolingo to the 1st Mandarin lessons. In Section 1, Unit 1, the subject matter was "Name food and drinks". Here are the 2 informational slides at the start of the unit that I neglected to look at when I started. 🙄 Here are also some of the lessons in the unit. Like the ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, it was much easier this time around than it was the 1st time I tried it 2 months ago back in May.

Later in the evening, I reviewed the Section 1, Unit 2 Mandarin lessons in Duolingo on "Nationalities". They also talked about the use of the word "ne" to ask a question.

I watch Episode 5 of Fights Break Sphere this evening.  SPOILER ALERT - The 1st years are assigned to their dorms, with the 4 main male 1st year students sharing the same dorm room. One of the teachers, who belongs to the same sect as his former fiance, bullies Xiao Yan.

Kai has explained to me what is happening with the number of views on the Stats pages. Apparently what I am experiencing is re-indexing by search engines. And since I am posting almost daily it needs to "see" what I am posting so that it "knows" what's there if anyone happens to be searching for that particular bit of information that I posted. So its just machines looking at stuff for future reference that is causing the number of views I am seeing rather than real people. I will not longer pay any attention to the stats. 

Kai likes to go to breakfast at Hawaiian Style Cafe in Waimea when he is here, so that's where we went this morning. He had the Chorizo & Lup Cheong Omelet & I had the Pūlehu Short Ribs. (Pūlehu as used in the name of this dish is not quite accurate, it would be more correct to use "koala" which means grilling. We would pulehu whole nenue (rudderfish, Kyphosus sandvicensis) directly on the coals; that's true pūlehu.)

After that we ran errands, stopping at Longs Drugs, HPM Building Supply, Mauna Kea Feed Supply, KTA Grocery Store, & The Waimea Butcher Shop. Waimea is a 45-minute drive away; so like going to Kona, when I am there I go to the places that have things I can't find in Kohala & pick them up if I need them.

It was still raining when we got back home. In fact, it was raining harder than when we left. Usually on Friday afternoons Marian & I get together with our dogs Poppy & Moʻo for a puppy play date; it was too wet today to do that. We'll try again next week.

Instead, we went to Motek to pick up some pastries for the potluck tomorrow night. We also went to the church to put up the chochin at the gravesites.

My pronunciation in the Duolingo exercises is sometimes hit or miss. And I am not quite sure why. To me it sounds like I am saying it properly. But I guess its not quite right. 

In the evening, when I went through the emails I had neglected throughout the day, I found I had an email from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Team eBird. They have updated how they present ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi on their birding app! Since I started using the eBird app, I have used their option that provides the names of birds in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, which was originally listed as "English (Hawaiʻi)". It is now listed as "ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi". Hūlō!

SPOILER ALERT - This evening during Episode 4 of Fights Break Sphere, Xiao Zhan's character Lin Xiuya appears as a 1st year student along with the other 1st years heading to the Jianan Fight Academy. Somewhat like the train full of 1st years on their way to Hogwarts, except that here the senior students ambush them & steal their energy talismans. It is after all a fight academy so might as well start fighting as early as possible, I guess. At one point the 1st years trick the seniors by making a savory soup with fish & morels!

Earlier in the episode Xiao Yan's father also tells him that he has grown up so he needs to change his hairstyle. Like I said earlier, the hairstyle makes a difference in how age is perceived. Leo Wu now looks like his 19-year old self. And Xiao Zhan looks like a late teens guy though he was 27 when this was filmed. They both have what I call K-Pop Boy Band hair! Which I don't think was really a thing during this particular historical time period.
