July 17, 2014, thru July 21, 2014

Current:
Shiro is missing. He apparently got out on Sunday when Mom and Dad were leaving for Las Vegas. Lori noticed he was missing but thought he was locked in one of the bedrooms. On Monday, Lori was about to call the locksmith because Mom had the key with her in Las Vegas. I suggested she look outside because he had gotten out before when Mom forgot to close the door. She found him outside but he would not come to her, she left food outside to keep him around. He was last seen on Tuesday. I have called the Avid microchip registry company and they have placed him on the Missing List; they will call as soon as they hear anything. Shiro's disappearance has helped me discover that the paperwork I filled out at the animal shelter's microchip event around 13 years ago was never turned in to the registry company, except for Xander's. I went online and registered the rest of them. If you have an animal that was microchipped and you turned the paperwork in at an event, you might want to double-check that your pet is really in the registry.

Uncle Art passed away last Sunday, February 28th. Aunty Judy asked us not to tell Mom, Dad, and Curt until they returned, so that they could enjoy their time in Las Vegas. When I called Mom this morning to remind her to take her alendronate I waited for her to mention it first. She asked at the very end if I knew. I said, Yes, and I told her Aunty Florence and I would be going down for the service. I will also be there to take Mom to a doctor's appointment.

Later, when I called Mom to remind her to take her morning medication, she had just gotten off the phone from talking with Aunty Florence. She was upset about Uncle Art, she was acting as if she had just found out. It was a good thing we did not tell them while they were in Vegas.

The abscess is getting better. I think I might have gotten some food stuck in the hole in my gum where my wisdom tooth used to be. My twice daily massaging is keeping the swelling down, though it is still tender.

Happy Birthday to Laura and Alina!

Previous:
While at dinner on Independence Day, I mentioned the problem with the sliding glass door. My friend Lois gave me a glowing recommendation for A Door Specialist. I arranged for them to come by after we returned from the Big Island. They did an excellent job! Mom can now move the door with only one finger!

After breakfast on most mornings, Dad sits by the front door feeding his birds. About a dozen zebra doves and a couple of spotted doves usually come by. Sometimes a bunch of them sit on the roof, looking like extras in "The Birds".

Addendum:
Mrs. Keliikipi passed away on August 5th. She was 93 years old. In hindsight, she probably moved in with her grandson for hospice care.

The Kohala house was fumigated in August. Prior to the fumigation our friend David spent a bunch of time trimming the trees and bushes back from the eaves and walls; the fumigators needed about 3 feet clearance to be able to set up the tents properly. Before we left in July, Mom and I placed all the food in the refrigerator and freezer in special Nylofume bags that resist the Vikane gas used for the fumigation. (There was no other food in the house.) The house is left in the tent for 24 hours, then it is aired out for another 24 hours. Rats, mice, and termites apparently succumb, but lizards do not. (According to the pest control people, the geckos can apparently slow down their respiration rate so it does not affect them.)

If you are interested in seeing more photos of the Kohala house, go to my cousin Tomiko's website and view the show "Passage" which features the house. She took the photos over a 20 year period; the show includes some photos of Obon and the surrounding areas.
