Momo is back! Yay! No one knows how he got back in the house, but there he was on Saturday morning. He could have snuck in with Brent on Friday night (doubtful) or when Mom went to get the paper early Saturday morning (most likely and she just forgot he came in with her). But now we know if he gets out again he knows where home is and also how to get back in!
Answered phones for KSER pledge drive with Cliff today. It was Bruddah Grant's first time hosting solo on Da Coconut Wireless. He did a great job hosting as well as doing the KSER pledge drive today. He's a pro!

03/24/15 Kai's Favorite Store
Mom skipped mahjong this morning due to a sore throat. (She skips the walk on mahjong day. Today she did neither.) She caught it from Dad, his started 2 days ago. If his doesn’t get any better tomorrow or if the phlegm she spits up turns green, they’re going to the doctor tomorrow whether they want to or not!
Went to Kai’s favorite store in Hawai’i - the Book Off. It’s a used book store in Shirokiya (a Japanese-style department store). They have $1 books and lots of titles, plus manga and things in Japanese. Here he is trying to decide what to get in the sci-fi/fantasy section. Usually his suitcase is about half books on the return trip.

The fan for the freezer has been making rattling noises since we arrived. And yesterday the door started to squeak when it was opened (actually its more like a moan than a squeak). Generally this is caused by Mom forgetting to close the freezer door and warm air condensing and freezing in places it usually doesn't get in to when the door is shut promptly. The repair guy came today but did not have a part to begin the fix with, so he will be back in a week. (I don’t do electricity or things under warranty.)
It drizzled after dinner and produced this anuenue.

After a frustrating morning dealing with parents with health issues who did not want to go to see the doctor (it is a holiday in Hawai’i - Prince Kuhio Day - so we would have to go to the Moanalua clinic about 30 minutes away rather than their usual place which is only about 5 minutes away), Kai and I went to the Waikiki Aquarium. We signed up for the “Behind the Scenes” tour and were the only ones so it was like getting a private tour; we highly recommend it if you are geeky like us.
I was unable to pick just one from today’s activities, so here are a bunch of photos. We got to see the rearing tank for the baby seahorses, the smallest ones in the photo were born today, the largest ones on 02/16. The spotted knifejaw is being trained to recognize the Hawai’i flag - they are extremely aggressive so staff trains them to come to a certain area of the tank to be fed so the other fish can get food. (One of them is now in the shark tank because he can’t intimidate them. In his previous tank he bullied the moray eels who were unable to get anything to eat.) The aquarium is doing studies on green sea turtles, which they mark with paint so they can tell them apart; the paint has to be refreshed every week. The final aquarium photo is of a giant clam from the usual side; its just kinda cool.

When we left, we continued around Diamond Head which brought us to the Fort Ruger Market and their octopus mural (which is not finished yet); if you like poke this is the place to go! It’s just a few blocks from my parents home. Note to Tomiko - They are no longer carrying kulolo so we will now have to go to Times or Foodland.

03/27/15 Leahi
SUCCESS!!! Got Mom and Dad to go to the doctor today! But they sort of didn’t have a choice; they had an appointment with their estate attorney and the doctor appointments were 45 minutes later so they were already in the car and had no say in which direction the car was going. Dad now has an antibiotic and expectorant to help him get over his cough, Mom was told she needed to take all her meds as prescribed and a referral for a social worker to visit (and make sure she is taking her meds) has been "prescribed”. (Her blood pressure was up and I found she had about 200 pills for each of the 5 prescriptions she has.) Plus she was told if she was feeling nauseous again to take a med that had been prescribed for her earlier this year.
As we were leaving the house we saw the Waahila Ridge fire from the driveway. One side of the ridge is above the University of Hawaii campus, the other is above the St. Louis school campus.

Ended the evening with dinner with high school friends Lois and Jackie at Kulana Terrace at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel. They featured live music, including Lois’ neighbor on vocals. The attached photo is the view of Leahi (aka Diamond Head) from our table. They make good use of the Japanese garden concept of shakkei or borrowed scenery. The Honolulu Zoo is exactly opposite the hotel and is bordered on the other side by Kapiolani Park so it is unlikely they will be selling any time soon and putting up buildings to block the view from the Queen Kapiolani.

03/28/15 Nico's Pier 38 and Bikes
Had lunch at Nico’s Pier 38 with a bunch of my diving buddies from college. If you like fresh seafood this is one of the places to go (there are a lot of good fresh seafood places in Hawai’i). I had the catch of the day, today it was swordfish. They serve it with ‘Nalo Greens, “100% organic, not 100% pest free”. Save room for dessert! Even the birds like Nico’s, this zebra dove was snacking on crumbs at the table next to us, moving just out of reach when people walked by. It was about 50 feet from the entrance and appears to have done this quite frequently; it was quite nonchalant about people walking by within a few feet of it.

Found out from my dive buddies that one of our mentors, Dr. John P. Craven, passed away last month at the age of 90. Unfortunately, the service will be a few days after I leave. He was instrumental in a number of marine-related initiatives. He was the Dean of Marine Programs at University of Hawai’i and the Marine Affairs Coordinator for the state. As the Dean he oversaw the Marine Option Program that I worked for as a student for a few years. (We got paid to SCUBA dive, it was a great job!)
The Waahila Ridge fire is still burning, though it is smaller than yesterday. The Hawai'i rain (=Washington drizzle) we had today kept it from spreading as fast but did not put it out.
Finally, here is a photo for my fellow DPW co-workers of a dedicated bike lane on one of the main streets. It is fully separated from the car travel lanes and is well used (even in the Hawai'i rain); cars that park in them get large fines. The green portions are to warn bikers that those are areas where cars can cross and warn drivers that bikes may be crossing through there. (FYI - I was being a safe driver, Kai took the photo.)
