November 15, 2014, thru November 20, 2014

Current:
This is the start of the posting of e-mails I sent while "on the road". For the most part they are unedited. Where appropriate, I have added hyperlinks if I failed to do so the first time around. I will group 4 to 6 days together in order to finish reposting all of them before I start my next long "road trip".

At KSER 90.7fm answering phones during Da Coconut Wireless for the pledge drive. Bruddah Ace is on the air with Bruddah Sandy on the pitch mic. They take pledges at any time of the year, so you can call 425-303-9070 or donate online no matter when you are reading this!

11/15/2014 Not Fried, Not a Biologist
The meal on the plane was something called “yakisoba”, but the noodles were boiled, not fried. As yakisoba it gets an F, as just a meal it gets a C.
Pork yakisoba, or so they say (from in-flight menu)

This was in the in-flight magazine:
… obviously not a biologist, turtles are reptiles.

Broken worm gear

11/16/2014 My First Chore (for this visit)
The worm gear inside the 40-year old window control mechanism was broken. (Actually this was the 2nd chore, I have no photos of unclogging the bathtub drain.) Each visit has had its share of repairs or phone calls to arrange for larger repairs that I can't do.

Philly Cheesesteak

Goes to Hawai'i … for Philly Cheesesteak. We went to the Makai Food Court in Ala Moana Center for lunch today while on the Great Holy’s Bakery Pie Hunt (more on that later).  Kai went for the very ethnic Philly Cheesesteak.  Why go to Pennsylvania when you can get a Philly Cheesesteak in Hawai’i?  (Note the white t-shirt. We went clothes shopping yesterday since Mr. Kai’s favorite colors are black and dark black, not good colors for Hawai’i. We also got him shorts and a pair of slippers - the pair of slippers he borrowed self-destructed while we were shopping.)

11/17/2014 Only in Hawai'i!
A unique blend of flavors: the smoky, salty flavor of kalua pig, accented by sharp cheddar, cilantro & salsa. I’m not sure this particular fusion cuisine will catch on.

11/18/2014 A Very Special Pie from Holy’s Bakery in Kapa’au, HI
The bakery is named after the Hori family who started it when Mom was a kid; the family still owns it. A 2013 newspaper article said Hawaiian Style surf shop had them but we found they were no longer in business & were told go to Foodland at Ala Moana Center. (I guess if you are a surf shop and pie is your best selling item, it doesn't bode well for your future.) They had apple, we bought 2! Long story short: We searched several other grocery stores and ended up with 5 pies! It has a “secret” ingredient - butter … lots of butter!

My nephew, David, arrived today. Since he just recently started at Amazon he does not have enough seniority so he will be working the Thanksgiving holiday. He and his sister, Sarah, who also arrived today, are spending the week before Thanksgiving with Grandma and Grandpa.

Mom with Xander
11/19/2014 Mom & Xander
Xander is the first of the 4 cats to move to Hawai'i. He was 11.9 pounds when he left Washington in April. After 3 months he was 14.24 pounds! He had quickly learned he could get more food by meowing.  He has lost some of that extra weight because he is walking around more. He can be out in the cat run and he also has the run of the house, including at night.  (Unlike in WA when the cats were confined to one room at night.)  His coloring has also gotten lighter due to the hotter climate (he’s half Siamese).

11/20/2014 Morning Yoga
Sarah taught Grandma some yoga moves to help loosen up her hip before she does her morning walk. Sarah is a yoga instructor, she has traveled around the world teaching.  She recently returned from Jamaica.

Hawaiian phone booth

Hawai'ian phone booths are much more colorful than the ones in Washington!  This one is on Mom's morning walking route around the nearby playground.

We spent several mornings weeding the yard and garden beds for Mom. We limited outdoor work to the morning since it was too hot for later in the day; we did driving errands & indoor work in the afternoon. One of the afternoon chores was getting bags of compost to add more organic matter to the wonderful iron oxide soil in Mom’s garden.
