ʻŌhana Fun Day

This morning I was at the ʻŌhana Fun Day celebration at Kamehameha Park; I was staffing the Kohala Reunion table. I only had a few people stop by who were not aware of the Reunion.

For lunch I had a laulau plate that I purchased from one of the ʻŌhana Fun Day vendors. This laulau only had pork but it had a lot. Laulau can also have fish & ʻuala in it as well; sometimes it is made with chicken or beef also.

I only ate the laulau for lunch today.

In the evening I went to the Mardi Gras Steak Fry fundraiser for the Nā Kūpuna ʻO Kohala hula halau. I sat across from Sean during the dinner, his wife is one of the halau members. He told me this one fundraiser for the group needs to bring in $10,000 to sustain them through the year. (I forgot to take a photo of the plate of food.)

It was interesting to see the demographics for the 2 events. The ʻŌhana Fun Day was attended mainly by young local families of color with children; while the Steak Fry was mainly older white adults, many who are transplants to the area. But it makes sense, the Steak Fry was to raise money so tickets were $25 each, not something you could easily take your 2 to 4 kids to; whereas the Fun Day was a free event to get information out to the community about health awareness, financial literacy, & emergency preparedness & had a lot of kid-oriented activities.

When I got back from the Nā Kūpuna ʻO Kohala fundraiser, Olomea was sitting at the edge of the kokutan, waiting for me. I think she was there because she could see me but Moʻo could not see her from where she was tied. Later Olomea moved to the front porch so I would see her & feed her.

More of the ʻŌhiʻa ʻai buds are opening up! But the branches are not quite totally covered yet. And there are only a few stamens on the ground.

I saw Roger & Dolly under Jessie's ʻUlu tree this morning. But no Henrietta; if she is sitting on a clutch of eggs there should be chicks soon.

The  eruption at Kīlauea is still paused. Scientists anticipate another episode may begin some time within the next 2 to 3 days.
