More Fencing!

Today Fred worked on putting up the panels along the easterly side of the anthurium garden. Unlike the fence along the back property line, this fence is to keep critters in. Namely the cats! Fred & I visited the Hawaiʻi Wildlife Center a few weeks ago so I could show him what I had in mind; their fence is to keep cats & rats out of the area holding the flight cages where the recovering birds are kept. The plan Fred came up with does a lot more; it will also keep the cats safe from any dogs that might come in to the yard from getting to them. And hopefully, it will be enough to keep the cats inside the enclosed area.

The eastern gate will be here.

The fence goes up about 5 feet, then is angled inward at about 45 degrees; similar to the HWC fence though theirs is pointed outward. Hopefully the overhang will thwart any efforts to climb over the top. My concern is that there are a few places where there is a live tree or shrub close to the fence. I am hoping they do not decide to climb up them to get out. I am hoping just having about 1000 square feet of outdoor area to explore & play in will keep them satisfied. They will also have an elevated flat area where they can lie in the sun.

The persimmon branch is about 4 feet above the fence.

This corner came together nicely.
These panels are being attached to the existing chain link fence (with the blessings of the neighbor).

I also spent a little time reworking the rocks at the outlet of the pipe; I also worked on the bottom of the kalo trench. I ran water in the laundry sink, then watched for the high points in the trench. It flows very well now with water reaching to the end of the trench. Though I don't think water from the washing machine will make it to the end of the trench; front loaders like I have are much more water efficient than the top loader my grandparents had. But I think water from showers will make it to the end of the trench. I don't need it to be completely saturated, just kept somewhat wet regularly.

Water flows all the way to the end! The kalo happily await transplanting day.
