Kīlauea Still Erupting

Kīlauea is still active, but much less showy than when the eruption started yesterday. The fountain of lava is not as high as when it began; which makes sense since some of the pressure has been relieved so it is not being pushed out as vigorously. It is still spewing out visible amounts of vog.

I checked the gauge for the gas today. This will be the winter solstice check up. I last checked it in October; I was calling that one the summer equinox check up. The level has not gone down much, it is now at about 40%. In October it was at about 45%. Even though the level has not dropped much I will continue to check at the change of the seasons just to get in to the habit & not find myself surprised one day with no hot water for my shower!

When I went to check the gas gauge I discovered an African tulip sapling growing right up against the tank. Actually there are 2; they will be removed shortly.

And I saw that the ʻohiʻa pots had been blown over by the winds. I also discovered I was mistaken in what the name of the orangey-red one is. In the bright light when I looked at it earlier I thought the label said "Makaii Ahu", but it says "Makali Ahu". Which makes more sense! I could not find a translation for "makaii" or "makaiʻi" on the Manomano Hawaiian Dictionary site. But one of the meanings of "makali" is, "glowing, bright, as of fire". "Ahu" has multiple meanings, one of which is, "heap, pile, collection, mound, mass". So one of the meanings of "makali ahu" could be a "mound that is glowing like fire" which is kind of what the photo of the flower reminds me of.

"Mound that is glowing like fire".

FYI "Nani" in the name of the other ʻohiʻa can mean "beautiful" or "beautiful flower", so Cherry Nani could be "beautiful cherry-colored flower". Of course, they would be referring to a Bing-type cherry rather than a Rainier-type cherry.

Got a USPS tracking text about 1:30 pm. It said the gift package that was shipped about 2&1/2 weeks ago from the east coast had arrived! I went to the USPS tracking website to verify & it said the package was still in Honolulu! Unfortunately I couldn't leave to check if it really arrived; I needed to wait for the Whirlpool washing machine repair tech. The service window I was given was 12 noon to 4 pm.

As it turns out the tech never arrived. At about 4:15 I texted the number I was given by Lake Appliance Repair in their email confirming my appointment. Then I called the number in the email; apparently they really don't have anyone to answer questions about missed appointments & I was given another number to text. So I did. As of 11 pm I have received no response. And I probably won't get one until Thursday. I am a bit annoyed. I could have gone to the USPS to pick up that gift package! Auē!

Hauʻoli lā Hānau e Vernon!
