Wireless Whiskers Now Operating

When I got back this afternoon, I checked the Wireless Whiskers to see what it had established as the eating pattern for Luna & S'mores. Luna was set at 11 minutes; S'mores was at 23 minutes. I adjusted S'mores amount to be 1 minute less than Luna's time since she is smaller than Luna.
This is what the AutoDiet Wizard determined for Luna.
This is the average length of time that S'mores ate during the test period.
This is how much she had eaten by 3:30 pm.
I adjusted the amount to one that is healthier for her.
When she got to 10 minutes she got locked out.

Shortly after I took my sunrise reference photo it began to drizzle; I took shelter under an ulu tree until it slowed down. The kupuna who walks with trekking poles kept on walking; he does several laps around the circle. I saw Laure & the Dog Pack as she was just starting her walk. Later I saw Yun & Lucky, she caught up with me & passed me. At Sierra Yun met up with Lorraine and they continued around the circle while I finished my walk; they were the only ones I saw during my cool down stretches. It drizzled on & off both during my walk and during my cool down.
Twenty-four minutes before sunrise on Waiʻalae.
Thirteen minutes before sunrise on Maunalani.
The intrepid kupuna.
Three minutes after sunrise on Sierra.
The intermittent drizzle.

Dad was eating breakfast in bed this morning. He didn't eat any of his fried egg sandwich but he ate all of his papaya and banana. He drank 120 ml cranberry juice but no water.

Similar to what happened on Halloween, cloud cover made my mid-morning walk a lot cooler. But this time it was due to a fairly good overcast rather than just one cloud in the right place. Because it was cooler I jogged 2 sections and did okay; but I think I will only do it when its cooler for a few more weeks. The only person I saw on my walk was Raymond giving one of the dogs a bath.

They're definitely doing more at the Lanipoko house. Not sure exactly what, but there looks like new footings are being constructed.

During my cool down stretches I saw a Yellow-fronted Canary in the tree below me. and I finally figured out that it is the source of a song that I have been trying to figure out! Yay!

Lunch today was Roast beef, Mashed potatoes, Seasoned green beans, Garden salad, Blonde brownie, and Potato chowder. Dad ate all his 1/2 peanut butter & banana sandwich and 2 blonde brownies. He drank 120 ml cranberry juice but no water.

I made the low carb Pizza Topping Casserole. I think I will make this recipe again; it was pretty good!

Marissa, one of the staff that leads activities for the residents, left yesterday for Japan. She is one of the dancers of Hula Halau o Kamuela, winners of this year's Merrie Monarch Festival. Since winning they have been invited to several venues to dance.

I checked my ketone levels after my mid-morning walk then after I returned home. The test strip was a little darker later in the day. I think more ketone bodies are produced when my body is doing more work and it becomes concentrated when I drink less water.
11:06 am, around 15 mg/dL; after mid-morning walk.
4:38 pm, between 15 and 40 mg/dL; after returning home.

November will be a busy month. Cousin Tomiko arrived on the Big Island this evening; she'll be there for a few days. While there she will be checking on the fence and pig damage. Hopefully the fence is fully functional and the pigs did not do much damage earlier. I have not been able to get back since Obon. On Thursday Tomiko will be here for a conference; she's staying at a hotel near the venue but the family will be getting together on Saturday. She and Curtis both leave on Sunday; she returns to Wisconsin, Curtis is heading to Las Vegas again. He returns the following Friday, which is also when the solar panel installation is scheduled to start. The next day Alexis arrives to head up the Oahu Seabird Aid program, she's here until December 13th so she'll be spending Thanksgiving with us. On the 19th of November Dad has a dental appointment and the 24th is his 95th birthday! It's a busy month!
This is the calendar in Dad's room.

AutoDiet Wizard Almost Pau

When I got back this afternoon, I checked the Wireless Whiskers to see what it had established as the eating pattern for Luna & S'mores. And discovered that I had misinterpreted the message on the face of the readout. We are now in Day 3 of the AutoDiet Wizard. When it says, "Y'day 26m Wiz2" it means that yesterday S'mores (or whomever) ate for 26 minutes and today is the 2nd day of the AutoDiet Wizard. Not that yesterday on Day 2 of the AutoDiet Wizard S'mores ate for 26 minutes. So we have another day to go for the Wireless Whiskers to calculate the average length of time each cat eats during the 24-hour period. Here's what they ate yesterday.

On my way up today I saw Kelly loading his surfboard into his truck; he was gone by the time I walked past. But I did see Tina with Massimo, Ink, & Chloe Bacon on the circle; Ink acted like he hadn't seen me in weeks! And today Chloe Bacon let me give her a bunch of scratching! Further along I saw Ona jogging up Sierra, its her Saturday morning ritual. I saw Lorraine down by the park, she was headed up to the top. On my way up Lurline I saw Yun & Lucky, so we walked together; she said she got a late start so she missed Lorraine. Near the top of Lurline we saw Lorraine! The 2 of them then decided to walk around the circle together. I met up with LaVie and we walked together until I got back to Maunalani. During my cool down stretches I saw Lorraine, Yun, & Lucky walk by; I also saw Ken with Toto & Chico.
Twenty minutes before sunrise on Waiʻalae.
Nine minutes before sunrise on Maunalani.
Twelve minutes after sunrise on Sierra.

Dad was in the Orchid Dining Room having breakfast when I arrived; Mr. Watanabe joined him a little later. Dad finished only 1/4 of his fried egg sandwich but all of his papaya and banana. He drank 120 ml cranberry juice and 60 ml water.
I asked for a smile; I think I should stop asking him to smile.

At the start of the month they weigh all the residents; Dad got weighed this morning right after breakfast. He was 142.6 pounds; a little lighter than last month when he was 145.2 pounds. We'll continue monitoring his eating.

Dad's picture is in the MNRC newsletter again! Last month the Veterans Club installed new officers at their monthly meeting; apparently Dad is now a Member-at-large. Other officers include Mr. Omiya as President, Mr. Aguillon as 1st Vice President, Uncle Larry as 2nd Vice President, Mr. Kalaukoa as Treasurer, Mr. Izon as Secretary, Mr. Watanabe as Public Relations Officer, and Mr. Ikuma as the other Member-at-Large. Curtis will now have to remember to take Dad to the Veterans Club meeting on the 3rd Friday of the month.

They also had photos of Polly's Doggie Baby Shower in the newsletter.

Good News! Mr. Shinagawa is back! He actually came back a few days ago but I kept forgetting to post the good news. Mr. Pires will be leaving next week; his daughter's have found a place that is more appropriate for the level of care that he needs. I think it will be good for him; he was getting very frustrated with staff hovering around him because of the higher level of care that they are required to provide at this facility. He is too mobile & independent for Maunalani.

During my mid-morning walk I started out by seeing Rob & Lily as I was doing my short jogging portion; Lily was focused on a dog in the house nearby that was barking at her. Later I met Suzanne, she is the friend that Cindy & Jim stay with when they are on the island. I saw that Kelly was back from surfing when I walked past.

Oh, no! The fan has disappeared! There was a fan on the 3rd floor that aimed towards the elevator. If you stand right by the buttons, it was very cool. It was not there when I waited after my mid-morning walk. Then I remembered, I had seen Orlando earlier, going by with a cartload of fans. I am hoping they will be replaced soon.

During my cool down stretches from the 3rd floor lanaʻi I usually look for birds. Today while I was doing that I noticed that I could see Molokaʻi & Maui in the distance! It's a been a while since I have seen them from the 3rd floor. I like to imagine if Maui was not in the way I might be able to see the Big Island and the Kohala Mountains.

Lunch today was Chicken Florentine, Angel hair pasta, Lemon butter broccoli, Tossed salad, Pineapple cheesecake, & Garden vegetable soup; my soup was missing today. Dad ate all his 1/2 peanut butter & banana sandwich and 2 desserts. He drank 120 ml cranberry juice but no water.

I left about a half hour early today, I had errands to run in preparation for the new windows. Basically I needed filing supplies to get things out of boxes & bags & into the filing cabinet so it is easier to move things away from the windows when they come to install them. I was told last week the windows are in port but the warehouse is full so they don't have any place to stage them for installation. I told them no problem since I don't want to have them working on the ground below the solar PV panel installers who are tentatively schedule for November 11th through 17th; RevoluSun will let me know the prior week if that schedule is still valid.

For dinner I finished off the leftovers from Halloween. In moderation and without pie it is somewhat low carb; at least, it is low carb enough for me. Using the Carb Manager app I found I can also track my exercise; I discovered for about 30 minutes of walking the app subtracts 7 g of carbs for my daily total! Winner! But what I have been doing is not adding the exercise in until the end of the day; I make my eating decisions based on no exercise. And there is a limit to how much one can exercise; I would have needed to walk for 6&1/2 hours to equalize the amount of carbs over 50 g that I ate on Halloween!

I'm back in ketogenesis! I am seeing nearly the same levels that I saw before I had my over-carbed Halloween day. I picked up more ketone test strips; I have almost used up the bottle of 50 that I purchased a week ago because of all the testing that I have been doing. No big deal, I prefer to figure out what's going on rather than just guess at what might be happening; getting data helps with that. Besides, you have to use the strips up within 2 months of opening the container (or the expiration date, whichever comes first). If I use one a day that is about 2 months; I'll do that once I figure out what's happening.
5:47 am, 15 mg/dL; upon awakening.
7:38 am, 5 mg/dL; after sunrise walk.
9:09 am, 5 mg/dL; before mid-morning walk.
11:10 am, 15 mg/dL; after mid-morning walk.
4:32 am, 15 mg/dL; after returning home.

Sleepy Cat was chilling in front of Chip's house this morning.

Post-Halloween Ketogenesis

My Halloween 141 g carb binge seemed to affect my body's ability to maintain ketogenesis. (That's 282% of the level of carbs I am trying to limit my consumption to!) As usual, I was at trace levels of ketone bodies when I woke up. The level did not rise above trace even after my sunrise and mid-morning walks. It went up a little just before lunch (about 2 hours after my mid-morning walk). Even in the afternoon it did not go above 15 mg/dL as it had previously when I was much better about keeping my carbs around 50 g or less. The encouraging thing is that I did burn enough fat to at least give me a "trace" reading. At least, I think that's encouraging. I wonder what my level would be if I ate all the carbs I wanted? That's an experiment for another time. For now the next experiment I want to conduct is testing every hour to see if I can detect how long after I exercise the metabolites show up in my urine in enough volume to change the level of the reading.
5:43 am, 5 mg/dL; shortly after waking.
7:57 am, 5 mg/dL; after sunrise walk.
9:22 am, 5 mg/dL; before mid-morning walk.
10:57 am, 5 mg/dL; after mid-morning walk.
12:26 pm, 15 mg/dL; before lunch.
3:05 pm, 5 mg/dL; before afternoon walk.
6:14 pm, 15 mg/dL; after afternoon walk.
9:19 pm, 5 mg/dL; before bed time.

During my drive up I saw Paul & Bodhi and Calvin the Recycler  heading up Sierra. During my sunrise walk I saw Lynnette & June by the park, then later as they headed down Lurline. LaVie's landlord Kevin was out walking Tazzie & Kila this morning by the park. After they passed me, I saw LaVie headed up Wilhelmina Rise; I later saw her completing a lap around the circle. Just before my walk ended I saw Ona & Rio; she said she got a late start and almost didn't make it out this morning. During my cool down stretches I saw Lorraine and Ken with Toto & Chico.
Twenty-one minutes before sunrise on Waiʻalae.
Eleven minutes before sunrise on Maunalani.
Six minutes after sunrise on Sierra.

I saw more Halloween decorations that people put out last night.

When I returned I did my 2 weeks worth of laundry, I can't remember why I didn't do it last week. I had washed my Omni-Freeze shirt, too. But instead of hanging it out to dry, I wore it. I have found it better to wet it and wear it slightly wet. So that's what I did, I wore it wet for my mid-morning walk. The temperature was already in the high 80's when I left the house.

During my mid-morning walk I saw Raymond with Koa & Kuma out in front. Rob & Lily walked by a short while later. I later saw LaVie with Tazzie & Kila.

For lunch I had a lighter variation on my dinner last night; only 11 g carbs versus 56 g last night! And that's without the mango pie, with the pie I had 124 g carbs for dinner last night! Aue! I think if I know I am going to have a carb-heavy meal I should skip the cranberry juice in the morning.

I started my afternoon walk later than I usually do in order to finish up and leave in time to get to Kokua Market just as they were ready to start their dinner service. Because I was walking later I ran in to Suzette on the circle; we walked down to the park together. On our way there we crossed paths with Ona & Rio who were headed up Sierra.

I had another dinner from Kokua Market this evening. I have decided to try every main meal they have, tonight I tried the Beef Liver Steak. I'm not a fan of most liver dishes; this did not change my mind about liver. I think it was overcooked, it was really tough. I met Fran who was also waiting for a dinner, she had the Veggie Eggplant Moussaka which is listed as an appetizer; it looked and smelled great!

S'mores outdid her previous day's worth of eating, yesterday she ate for 26 minutes! Luna ate for a reasonable 11 minutes; less than she ate the day before. Today is the last day of the AutoDiet Wizard data collection period. Tomorrow the Wireless Whiskers will be in its actual control mode where the doors of the feeder will close when a cat that has reached it allowed limit of feeding time tries to eat more food. I will suggest to The Roommates that they leave Luna at whatever time the Wireless Wizard allots for her, then see how she looks after a month at that level. I will suggest they cut S'mores back to 1 minute less than whatever level Luna is at and also watch her for a month before deciding whether they need to readjust the feeding time allowed.

I saw Koa & Kuma's buddy Shiro this morning, he was lounging around just outside their gate.
