2025 Kohala Reunion Opening Day

Today was the 1st day of the Kohala Reunion, a 3-day celebration held on the Independence Day weekend to celebrate all things Kohala! It is held every 5 years so this is the 6th one since it was 1st held in 2000. This year's theme is Kohala ʻAina Momona - Kohala the abundant land.

Kai, Tomiko, & Rei started out the day with a huakaʻi to the Mahukona Navigation & Ecological Complex. It is one of 6 field trips that participants can go on as part of the Kohala Reunion. The other huakaʻi included Iʻole, Kahua Paʻa Mua, Kohala High School, North Kohala Tool Library, & Kohala Heritage Center. In the previous Kohala Reunion, I was not a volunteer & attended the huakaʻi for Iʻole & Kahua Paʻa Mua. Since then, I have independently been to the tool library & the heritage center.

In the meanwhile, I was on the registration desk, in charge of the pre-registered P through Z attendees. Besides checking them off the attendance list, we gave them their swag bags containing a program book, commemorative pen, free raffle ticket for a door prize, & a memorial heart. If they also ordered the reunion t-shirt, blanket, or towel, those were packed in their bag, too. While I was at the desk I met Betsy, Curtis & Susan's math teacher from intermediate school. And I also reconnected with Uncle Kenneth's friends Rudy & MaryAnne whom I had met over 30 years ago at a family reunion in Las Vegas; they are here along with their daughter Malia whom I had met about 25 years ago at another family reunion in Las Vegas.

The registration desk closed at 4 pm which conveniently freed me up to be the interviewer for the Talk Story session hosted by the Kohala Culture & History Advisory Group. I was to interview Galo & Guy but found that Jeff had been listed as the interviewer; which was totally fine with me! He did a much better job than I could have since he knew some of the history for each of the people he was interviewing.

Jeff checks out set before Reunion officially opens.

It was about 7 pm when we left the Reunion. Since we were all tired, we went to KO Pizza for dinner instead of trying to make a meal at home. I wasn't able to get pictures because my phone had died about 2 hours earlier. I was only able to get photos of 2 of the exhibits before things opened; I will get the rest of them tomorrow.

The HVO is saying the next episode of the Kīlauea eruption is most likely to occur sometime between July 7th & the 9th. Hopefully we will be free so that Tomiko & Kai can see it.
