The Muse Whiskey & Coffee

Kai's favorite coffee place in Everett is also closed on Monday. But today he knew he wanted to go to The Muse Whiskey & Coffee. We had met my friend Jean there last year & he liked their coffee. It is in the historic old Weyerhaeuser Building that has now been moved to a location down by the waterfront. We had a light breakfast to start our day.

Some of the breakfast options.
Our choices.

Early this morning, as I got ready to leave, I admired the gardens in Mark & Charles' yard next door. They have done a lot to improve the place. I originally met them in 2008 when they moved in next door to Anne & Mary Kaye; the yard looked much different then.

Raised beds for vegetables & berries.
There are several dwarf & espaliered fruit trees in front.

As we were leaving Everett, we drove by the old house. It has now been painted a very dark color with a bright red door. The big, beautiful, old rhododendrons in the front of the house have been cut down as well as the birch tree that shaded the house during the summer. And they are not taking care of the flowering plants in the beds in front of the house. In the back I could see that the hardy kiwi is still growing & the apples are doing well; however, it looks like they don't like apples! There was a lot of fruit on the ground; the ones under the Red Gravenstein are a mix from several varieties I had grafted on to that tree since it was not a reliable producer every year. And the Spartan is an excellent pie apple! Auē! Such a waste. At least they have fixed up the garden shed, garage door, & compost bin. I could not see them, but I am assuming the Van & Rainier cherry trees, Asian pear, blueberry bushes, & Martha Washington asparagus patch are still there since they have not removed any of the fruiting plants that can be easily seen from the road & alleyway. I hope they are making use of some of the other produce.

I like that the big rock is still there in the sidewalk strip.

We went to the car wash before we left Everett. I like to make him wash & wax the car while I am visiting so it at least gets some TLC while I am here.

Then we headed down to north Seattle for lunch with Clarissa & Julie. We spent so much time catching up, I forgot to take photos of the lunch Clarissa prepared. Later she has a Zoom meeting with Oscar about a road project; I got to say a quick Hi! to Oscar before we left.

Kai's old boots are starting to fall apart. So on the way back up we found a store that had the same brand since he liked the side-zip feature on his old boots. Unfortunately they no longer make that model of boot; he had to settle for one that had the zipper down the front.

We also stopped in at Trader Joe's to say Hi! to Gulshan as well as pick up some omiyage. She surprised us by paying for all the omiyage! Next time I will do the bulk of my Trader Joe's omiyage purchases at a different store, then go buy a few things at her store & say Hi! to Gulshan! One of the things that Kai did get was the non-dairy frozen dessert. Gulshan had shared some with us on a previous visit & it was very good!

Kai got the frozen dessert listed at the far right.
Here he is dishing it up for dessert.

We went to Whidbey Island with Mary Ellen & Michael to have dinner with Amelia & Emanuel. Of course Louie & Maximus were there, too. It was a great dinner & a pleasant ferry ride. This was the 1st time I have been to the new ferry terminal in Edmonds; its beautiful & incorporates cultural & historical information. The landscaping also uses a lot of native plants. We met the immediate family in around 2000; they host the Diversity Diner.

Lights of City of Edmonds.

While we were gone, Kai's landlord David dropped off his HelloFresh meal kit subscription that he had forgotten to cancel for this week. It comes in a special insulated box with environmentally friendly ice bags. It has helped improve Kai's eating habits as well as cut down on food going bad in the refrigerator since he has forgotten about it.

The HVO says the next eruption of Kīlauea will likely begin in the 1st week of September.

Hauʻoli lā Hānau e Penny & Corinna!
