DWS Community Meeting

The Department of Water Supply held a community meeting this evening. Their main reason for being here was to apologize (profusely!) to the community for having 2 water outages a month apart. The 1st one was on August 1st & lasted until the 12th; the 2nd was on Sept 1st & lasted until the 14th. In both of them the water pressure was so low my washing machine would not run so I had to go to Waimea to do laundry. While the map below shows 3 wells servicing the area I live in, only Hāwī #1 & Hāwī #2 are on-line; Halaula #1 has been off-line since October 2023. It was Hāwī #2 that failed both times; leaving Hāwī #1 to supply about half the amount of water that is usually used by the community. Although 2 weeks might seem like a long time for the repairs to be completed, protocols developed since the water outages in Kona in 2023 have significantly reduced the amount of time the community was under the Essential Use Only order. In 2023 they had to conserve water for about 6 months before the Kona wells were back to normal pumping capacity! The cause of the recent pump failures are still under investigation.

In the morning I went to work out at the Fitness Room. But the room was not open so I walked around the outside of the gym while waiting. I had already decided to park on the far side of the gym from the fitness room to get some walking in & help me warm up my muscles before I start exercising. Today I did 1 lap around the gym before Jan showed up; I stopped & talked with her while we were waiting for Christine to come & open up the fitness room.

This is where I am parking.

Christine & Colleen showed up about 20 minutes later; Colleen who has Alzheimer's was moving slower than usual getting ready this morning. I decided to start my exercise routine with the rowing machine; I think that will become my favorite machine! Today I also tried out the stair stepper machine & the elliptical machine; my knees were really feeling it when I was done. I did a little research later & discovered the elliptical is a little better at protecting your knees over the stair stepper; so I guess it will be the elliptical for me!

Unlike most gyms the fitness room has a view!

When I returned home, I saw Jessie in her backyard picking ʻulu (breadfruit, Artocarpus altilis). There used to be 3 trees but 1 was actually on the Surety property & was too close to the property line & had to be removed so the new fence could be installed. But I think she still gets plenty of ʻulu from the 2 remaining trees.

My financial advisor Harold sends out a podcast every so often; he sent one today. I usually do not watch them because I don't understand them; I think I have watched only 2 in the 8 or so years that Harold has been my financial advisor. I decided to watch what he sent today since I have an appointment to talk with him next week. As usual, the only thing I understood was that the topic would be his strategy depending on what the Federal Reserve folks decide to do at their meeting today. The most important thing for me to understand is that Harold's strategy has been very successful for me; that's why I pay him to do what he does.

This is Harold; I understand this part of the podcast.
What does this mean? I have no idea.
All I know is he used Nvidia as an example. Not sure an example of what though.
I've heard him mention this before; not sure how its used.
Great looking graphic! Not sure what it's about.

Today is the day I pick up my CSA subscription; I have an every other week subscription otherwise I am overwhelmed with vegetables! The items on this sign are extras that you can purchase when you come to pick up your subscription.

Travis' wife made the sign!

After the DWS meeting, I stopped at Kings View Cafe to pick up dinner. I got my usual, Mahimahi Salad with papaya seed dressing & onions on the side. But they were out of onions today so I substituted nothing for them. Kings View is convenient since it is right across the street from the Old Courthouse aka Senior Center which is the venue for many of the community meetings.

The next episode of the eruption at Kīlauea is likely to start between today & the 20th, but they are hedging their bets & also saying it could start even later.

Hauʻoli lā Hānau e Ryan!
