Today was Aloha Burger's last day in Hāwī. They are closing this location because they have not been able to build up enough clientele over the past 6 months to make it sustainable. Guess I should have ordered the Triple instead of the Keiki Burger... Now I will have to go to Waimea on Saturdays to get a burger from them. Since they open at 7:30 am in Waimea they have something called the Best Breakfast Burger in Town (BBBT) that is made with a coconut syrup drizzle! I'll have to go early & try that.
On my way back from lunch I stopped to pick up more Royal Canin Urinary SO food for Hoʻokoa & ʻAlani; they go through a bag in about a month. Last February, when Jane was visiting, we had to make a special trip to an emergency vet in Waimea so Hoʻokoa could get treated for a blocked urethra; he was there for 3 days to make sure he would pull through. (It was the holiday weekend, our usual vet was closed; emergencies are referred to the Waimea vet.) Now I feed the boys this expensive prescription food (about $6.50/#) so I don't have to worry about them. It keeps their urine within the range where minimal amounts of crystals form while in the bladder; that plus drinking lots of water keeps them flushed out of the system so blockages are less likely. I will gladly pay the extra money for the food to not have to worry about their health & running to the emergency vet all the time! A bonus is that Kohala Vet Clinic carries it so I do not need to special order it & pay an exorbitant shipping fee. (Only the boys are getting it since males are prone to crystal build-up due to their anatomy; the crystal build-up is rare in females.) FYI When I see either of them in the Cat Genie peeing, I listen. If I can hear them peeing it is a good sign!
I got an email this morning; Mahukona Park will be open again tomorrow! It was one of the questions asked during the community meeting last weekend. James from the Parks Department assured people at the community meeting that once the hazardous material remediation was done it would be opened up again & now it is!
Later in the afternoon I spoke to Darren from Hakoda's Building Supply; the part we think my washer needs is still on back order. Their parts supplier has now been told it will be in by February 14th. Which means another trip to Waimea to do laundry. On the plus side, if I go early I can stop at Aloha Burger in Waimea & try the Best Breakfast Burger in Town!
I found out yesterday that Jessica & Jim who live across the street are selling their house & moving to a farm down on Hoea Road. I found out because Moʻo was barking because someone who came to see their house parked in front on the road & Moʻo needed to let the whole neighborhood know! I asked Jessica to text me when they are having others coming by so I can move Moʻo to the back so she doesn't go on full alert! (I have been tying her out front so that people driving by with less than good intentions who might be tempted by the construction materials & tools have second thoughts because there is also a very vocal barking dog out there.)

I did a quick walk around the back yard to check the status of some of the fruiting plants. The ʻōhiʻa ʻai (mountain apple) buds are just starting. The avocado is covered with flower buds; I hope some of them become fruit this year.

In the evening, I got a Civil Defense alert. The flooding along the easterly side of the island is continuing. It does not affect us here in North Kohala.
The eruption at Kīlauea is still paused but scientists say there may be more to come soon. In fact, the latest summary says possibly in the next 4 to 5 days. Stay tuned!
