Avoiding the 14-Day Quarantine

I watched Governor Ige's press conference this afternoon. He & his team were announcing the requirements for travelers to avoid the 14-day quarantine, it will be effective August 1st. They are in the process of developing a national database with large pharmacy chains to test within 72-hours of a traveler's arrival here. If the test is negative, then no quarantine will be necessary; if the traveler has not gotten a test they will be required to quarantine for 14 days. This applies to residents as well as non-residents. They are developing a separate protocol for residents who travel out of state only for a couple of days and come right back, as some business people do. Unlike Alaska, tests will not be offered upon arrival since the state can only do 3000 tests per day and the usual daily number of travelers arriving here is 30,000. This is similar to the 5-day or Less rabies quarantine program for incoming cats & dogs; except if the dog or cat doesn't get tested & vaccinated before arriving they have a 120-day quarantine!

One question asked of the Governor was whether he was making the announcement about the new program today because of the US Department of Justice filing yesterday saying the 14-day quarantine was unconstitutional because it discriminated against non-residents. The Governor laughed and shot the question down saying all the reporters there have been hounding him for the past 2 weeks for a date of the lifting! State Attorney General Connors also answered saying everything implemented since the start of the pandemic, including the emergency declaration, has been reviewed for constitutionality before being implemented. From what I have read, the filing says the quarantine is unconstitutional since only visitors are quarantined and not residents; speaking from experience, I can tell you (as I sit  here at home on Day #13 of my 14-day quarantine) that is absolutely false! I think the Hawaiʻi District DOJ attorney was politically pressured in to making that filing. If he has been watching any media he knows locals have to quarantine and locals have also been arrested and fined for breaking quarantine; I've noted that here in this blog as well. They just don't break quarantine as much as non-residents because they know they will get reported by their neighbors who are looking out for the community, especially nā kūpuna!

Today was the 2nd to the last Papa ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. I have been finding that the classes are helping me with Duolingo. I can understand simple sentences that I read and sort of understand slightly longer sentences. Speaking or interpreting what someone says to me is much harder.

I think I will listen to this webinar.

OK! Only one more day of practicing to get up!
Fifty-seven minutes before sunrise.

For lunch today I had a slice of Best Keto Bread with peanut butter & avocado.

The disturbance to the east has become stronger & more organized and is now known as Tropical Depression 3-E. It is still in the Eastern Pacific region at about 135W longitude but is expected to cross in to the Central Pacific region by the weekend. It is about 1500 miles southeast of Hilo.

For dinner I had leftover chili with cauliflower rice. I really like adding sour cream and avocados to my chili!

During Papa ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, one of their resources was Kaʻulumaika.com. They have several worksheets on Hawaiian.

I got an email late this afternoon; apparently they need more contact tracers ASAP because of the spike in positive cases that we had last week and that appears to be happening again this week. They are adding more people to Cohort 1 and online classes will start on June 29th. There will be 8 classes per week since this bunch of people has to catch up with the original Cohort 1 people who started classes 10 days ago. Immediately after completing the class, they will be deploying the contact tracers and are looking for a 3 month, full-time commitment. I answered the questions and wrote my essays; I returned my responses in about 4 hours. I wonder if how fast you respond is part of the selection criteria?

There were 16 new COVID-19 cases reported today for a total known cases of 835; 13 were on Oʻahu, 1 on Hawaiʻi Island, and 2 diagnosed outside of the state. Six of the Oʻahu cases were found through contact tracing of existing clusters. While no new deaths were reported, the number of hospitalizations has now increased to 105. Almost 72,000 coronavirus tests have now been done with less than 1.2% being positive.

Hauʻoli lā Hānau e Allis!
