ShangriLa

A week ago I talked to my friend Janice about her upcoming visit here in January 2022. One of the places I had earlier talked about taking her to is ShangriLa, Doris Duke's former estate which is now part of the Honolulu Museum of Art. They had been shut down like many other public places during the pandemic, I checked today to see whether that status had changed. It had! But days & group sizes are limited. And the January dates won't open up until December 1st.

It is a Fast Day for me & there was no call for MRCs to help with testing at Aloha Stadium so I spent most of the day in bed, conserving energy.

For dinner I had the remaining vegan chili, curried cauliflower, & steamed broccoli & kale.

When I picked Luna up this morning she growled at me! She is returning to her normal grumpy self. Now that she is no longer constantly wearing the cone collar she can scratch her own ears so she appears to think it is no longer necessary to tolerate humans. Keala was being her normal self; hanging out in the cat run, checking out the view from the top of the gate.

Keala.

Although Kīlauea is still erupting, visually it appears that the amount of lava is lessening. The thermal image shows only about half the lava lake being intensely hot.

The Aix weather app forecast rain in Honolulu until mid-afternoon; I didn't see or hear any. For Kapaʻau, Aix forecast rain throughout the day; Big Island Now forecast scattered showers with a 50% chance of rain. The Honomū weather station recorded 0.17 inches at 6:37 a.m.; by 4:04 p.m. that had increased to 0.22 inches. By 9:30 p.m. that had increased to 0.24 inches of precipitation. For Marysville, Aix forecast partly cloudy skies in the morning, changing to rain around noon & through the remainder of the day; the traffic cams showed the pre-noon forecast to be correct & it seems like the partly cloudy skies prevailed for the rest of the day.

It was a sad day for some surfers; the Waikīkī surf rack where some kept their surfboards burned down today. This was the 2nd time in 2 years that this has happened; over 500 boards are stored at this location. North facing shores appeared to have the best waves today, especially later in the day.

Laniakea (N) at 6:42 a.m.
MIA at 6:42 a.m.
Waikīkī (S) at 6:43 a.m.
Banyans (W) at 6:45 a.m.
Laniakea (N) at 4:00 p.m.
Still MIA at 4:01 p.m.
Waikīkī (S) at 4:02 p.m.; no surf but at least they have their boards.
Banyans (W) at 4:03 p.m.

There were 144 new cases of COVID-19 reported today, bringing the total known cases up to 82,394. There were 6 new deaths reported, increasing the death toll to 872; currently there are 2051 cases considered active. The 7-day new case average for Oʻahu is 69 with a positivity rate of 1.8%.
