Happy New Year! Today is the first day of 2021; many are hoping it will be better than 2020. There are indications that it will be; for one there are 3 vaccines against SARS CoV2 that have emergency use approval. And there are more on the horizon. The big questions are, how many people will agree to be vaccinated? And, how long will it take for the 60 to 70% of the world to be vaccinated so that there "herd immunity" can begin to reduce the spread?
I decided to spend a lot of the day practicing self-care. I was going to start with a sunrise walk but the weather was not cooperative. I slept a lot and when I did get up for lunch I indulged in watching a couple of Ask a Mortician videos. One that I thought was particularly timely was the one about the bubonic plague in San Francisco in the early 1900; there were similar parallels in the response of both government officials and the public to COVID-19.
The cats left me a present this morning; maybe a thank you for being there for them last night? Or, may be not.
I was also briefly sidetracked by an article about a master's degree in ninja studies. IF you had one, then when you say, "If I tell you, I would have to kill you," you might really mean it! They say there is only 1 person that has that degree, but who knows how many there really are out there ...
The Aix weather app seemed to have a pretty good handle on the forecast for us today; it did start out with precipitation which lasted through about mid-morning. Then it cleared up and was dry for the rest of the day. In Kapaʻau, according to the Tesla app,it did much of the same only at a higher intensity on the precipitation. And it looked like there were clouds but no precipitation in the afternoon, becoming wet again in the early evening.
There was a huge spike in COVID-19 cases today with 241 new cases being reported; the number of known cases is now 21,639. There was also 1 new death reported bringing the death toll up to 289; currently there are 1727 cases considered to be active. The 7-day new case average for Oʻahu is 93 with a 4.1% positivity rates; there were no inmates included in todayʻs number of new cases.
Hauʻoli lā Hānau e Judith, Linda, Mari, Todd, & Judy!
