Lurline from Sierra

I tried a new segment for my walking route this morning; it's one I call "Lurline from Sierra". This is the route that Kavita suggested when I first met her; she's right, it is a nice walk that doesn't have any steep surprises. It was only 1.57 miles; I think it would have been closer to 1.6 miles if I had included the lap around the field at the park but I had stopped to talk to Suzette so I skipped that so I wouldn't be too late in getting to Maunalani to help out with Dad's breakfast.
Route for Lurline from Sierra sans lap around the field.
The lowest point is where Lurline intersects with Sierra.

I took a series of photos along the way, starting from the intersection of Wilhelmina Rise and Sierra; if you want to see the earlier part from the park to that intersection go here to when I first did that section. I ended the photos at the intersection of Lurline & Matsonia; to see what it looks like on  Lurline uphill of Matsonia go here to when I first did that section, just remember that the first half of that section is going down Matsonia.

It was misting when I got back to the parking lot to do my cool down stretches. Dad was eating breakfast in bed when I got to Maunalani. He finished off all his papaya without prompting, then worked on the supplements. Yay!

For my morning walk I left from the upper parking lot, went down to the park, did a lap around the field, then went to Lurline and Sierra and walked up Lurline back to the upper lot; it amounted to 1.38 miles. I should also have included Maunalani Circle for another 0.4 miles, but I needed to be back to the house by 11:15 so we could take off by 11:30 to get to Aunty Judy's house for lunch with Aunty Michie & Myrtle who were visiting from California.

The Roommates brought back a bunch of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, succulents, a culinary lavender plant for me, and some jams. More on these later.

We bought some guacamole to test out the guacamole keeper. I loaded the keeper up and elevated it to force the air out. I put it in to the refrigerator, we'll check it tomorrow to see if it has turned brown.

Tropical Storm Walaka is about 800 miles southwest of Honolulu, headed straight for Johnston Island. (That's the pink dot on the map below; it means they are under a hurricane watch.)

Hagatna, Guam

We got an interesting piece of mail today. It was from Maite, Guam, to Hagatna, Guam. The return address started with 647 like our address. Then someone mistyped the zipcode on the "Return to Sender" sticker; it was supposed to be 96910 not 96816. I'll be taking the mail back to the post office on Monday.

During my morning walk, a Kolea was up in the parking lot; I didn't see it until it flew off when I walked in. It flew to the top of Peter's house, but then it flew off again some time while I was walking around the field. There were a lot of people on the courts this morning. Dad was eating breakfast in bed when I arrived at his room. He ate half his papaya on his own & drank all his supplements without prompting. He even asked for more of the supplements!

Lunch today was Pork yakisoba, Seasoned broccoli florets, Tossed salad, Fresh pineapple, & Potato chowder. It was an interesting lunch; yakisoba is fried noodles but there were no noodles. It was like just the other things you would throw in to the wok when you are making pork yakisoba. Oh, and there was no broccoli to be found on the tray. The pineapple was good; sweet & tender. Dad ate 1/4 of his half sandwich; which would be 12.5% but they only record by increments of 25% so it goes down as 0%; he drank all his supplements.

For my afternoon walk I usually just go down to the park and back from the lower parking lot; a nice short 0.6 mile walk during the hottest part of my day. But because I slept through my mid-morning walk I did that longer morning route during the afternoon; it was a hot but bearable 1.4 miles. There were 3 Kolea at the park; a lone Kolea in the parking lot that flew up to the roof when I arrived and a pair down on the field. I was able to get a photo of the cluster of Monstera fruit. I also took a photo of an old octopus tree fruit branch; all the fruit had fallen off and it looked sort of like an octopus arm!

My phone does weird things. It says I have 4865 contacts, but when I delete a contact that number doesn't change; it only changes if I add a contact so I really have no idea how many contacts I have in my phone. The birthday app I use says I know the birthdays of 778 of my contacts and I am positive I don't know the birthday of every person in my contacts list; so I have at least 779 contacts. If I wanted to be anal about this I could randomly select 100 contacts, count how many I have birthdays for, do the math & figure out from that subsample approximately how many contacts I really have. If I wanted to be really anal about this I would figure out what sample size would be needed for a 99% confidence interval and examine that number of contacts. I am doing neither.

I am a little concerned that I may have reached my current limit on walking; I am finding myself more tired during the day, which could be a sign of the effects of the fibromyalgia. In fact, today I napped while sitting in a chair through what would have been the time to start my mid-morning walk; I got up about 30 minutes later. For this past week I was supposed to be doing 3.6 miles each day. Due to a variety of things I ended up doing around that amount only on 2 days. On 4 of the other days I did around 3 miles and on 1 day I logged no miles. My weekly average was 3.22 miles per day for the days I walked or 2.76 miles per day over the course of the week. I am scheduled to change my route tomorrow but the distance still remains at 3.6 miles per day; we'll see what happens.

Or perhaps my fatigue is because of being unable to get a good night's rest. The heat has made it difficult for me to sleep at night, even with the fan on and the windows and door wide open. I have also been allowing Shiro to sleep with me to make sure he can stay warm enough; I leave the door open so he can get to the litter box and his food dish. Which also means that Chibi can get in to the bedroom; which means I get up every time someone jumps on or off the bed which happens about 4 to 6 times a night. Auwe! Not only that, but they both like to sleep against me so with their 102 degree F body heat that means it feels even hotter. No wonder I am sleeping so poorly at night!

The Roommates are returning just before midnight tonight. It will be interesting to hear about their adventures on Maui. On a couple of days the news showed shots of flooding on some highways; I checked in with them & they texted back that they were in a different area and were unaffected.

The disturbance I mentioned last night, has gained strength and is now Tropical Storm Walaka with sustained winds of 40 mph. It is about 650 miles south of us, moving westerly at about 15 mph, and expected to not pose any threat to the islands.

Happy Birthday to Amy!

There is a Disturbance in the Force

... er, I mean, Central Pacific. The disturbance has crossed over from the Eastern Pacific; it's winds are not yet strong enough to designate it as a cyclone but they anticipate it has an 80% chance of becoming a tropical depression within the next 48 hours, possibly as early as tonight. Stay tuned!

During my morning walk I saw a Kolea at the park. It was watching me closely as I moved away from it. Then a lady with 2 dogs came jogging on to the field; I had seen her earlier as I approached the park, she was jogging along the path at the bottom of the forested area and looked like she was leaving, I did not see the dogs at that time. As soon as the dogs got on to the field the Kolea flew off. Later on Matsonia I found another dead invasive, another toad!

My mid-morning walk started out with a drizzle that quickly turned to mist, then dissipated. It was relatively cool when it was misting, but became very muggy once it stopped. There was only one Kolea down at the park and it was rather nervous but did not fly off; I did see someone leaving with a large dog as I had approached the park. The Board of Water Supply has started to work on Matsonia today, it looks like they will be digging things up like they have been doing on Sierra & Maunalani Circle. I got a photo of a bamboo stand on Matsonia that will be a good subject of a painting.

Close-up it looks like someone has painted stripes on the culms!

Lunch today was Sesame chicken, Steamed rice, Namasu, Tossed salad, Banana bar, & Minestrone soup. Before we were done Dad needed to use the toilet; while we were gone one of the management people who was helping took away all our lunch! By the time she was able to get another sandwich Dad was even less in the mood for eating; he didn't even feel like drinking his supplements so he had nothing at all for lunch. But he did have fun playing with a Gold Dust Day Gecko that came to visit him.

The Gold Dust Day Gecko comes to visit Dad.
The gecko decided to check out Dad's lunch.
The gecko leaped on the the planter ...
... then leaped on to Dad's shoulder.
It jumped to his wheelchair, then back to the planter.

Yesterday Dad received several lei as part of the event honoring him. They're now all hanging off of the light over his bed along with the shell lei he got for being a grandfather.

I skipped my afternoon walk so that I could see the event to honor Mr. Kalaukoa; he is one of the residents that I talk to every time I see him in the hallways. He always greets me like I am someone he knows from before; I wanted to meet one of his relatives to see if I might look like someone Mr. Kalaukoa knows. I met his daughter Sandra, she said she just thinks he's a friendly guy. Today was also Mr. Kalaukoa's 88th birthday.

Kai is having front end work done on the Subaru; he knew it needed a new CV joint but it looks like it really needs a whole new front axle. The trick will be in finding a replacement axle in working condition for a 26 year old Subaru!

Happy Birthday to Dorothy, Hannele, Sheryl, & Isaiah!

Honoring Dad at Maunalani

Today was the day they asked Curtis & I to do a short presentation about Dad; they are honoring all their veterans in a lead up to Veterans Day in November. We concentrated on Dad's time in the military and his love of fishing.

The weather today has been very muggy; the strange wind pattern is holding for a few more days. During my morning walk I was happy that there was a large cloud blocking the direct sun but allowing the rest of the sky to be blue. The sun finally broke out from behind it just as I was grabbing my gear and heading to the overlook to do my cool down stretches. The pair of Kolea were at the park foraging & didn't pay much attention to me. On my walk down Matsonia I heard a bunch of barking dogs & discovered where Cody & Robbie live. I also saw the Monstera, there are now 3 brown flower sheaths and a new flower forming; I couldn't get a photo today because of the car parked in front of it.

Dad was in his wheelchair in the Orchid Dining Room eating breakfast when I arrived; he had a couple bites of papaya & 1 bite of scrambled eggs. He wanted to get back in bed, I let him sleep through Namaste so that he would have more energy for the afternoon so he could be present for the event honoring him.

Unlike my early morning walk, during my mid-morning walk it was very sunny. The muggy weather was not helping matters; I heard the heat index for today was 97 degrees F. As I was coming up Lurline I heard what sounded like a rush of water somewhat like a flash flood would make only much smaller. All of a sudden there was a bunch of water coming down the side of the street in the swale; a mini-flash flood! Further up the road it became apparent it was coming from one of the Board of Water Supply construction sites I walk past, there just never was any water running along the side of the road before. My Keen's kept my feet dry when I had to cross the water.

Lunch today was Spaghetti & meat sauce, Italian vegetable blend, Garden salad, Fresh honeydew cubes, & Cream of broccoli soup. I'm not sure what made the vegetable blend Italian, but there was edamame in it which I have never thought of as being Italian. Dad did not want to eat anything or drink his supplements.

The things I ordered from Hammacher Schlemmer arrived today. I got 2 mosquito-killing light bulbs for the Kohala house; its like a zapper at the base of the bulb so as they are attracted to the porch light at the front and back doors they get zapped. I also got a hat that is supposed to repel mosquitoes and a radiant barrier hat for Kai that is supposed to keep you cooler. I also got a guacamole keeper since I like guacamole and I have an avocado tree that I anticipate will produce a lot of fruit! I also got a birthday present for The Roommate Who Likes to Wash Dishes; you'll have to wait until after I give it to him to find out what it is since he reads the blog.

Happy Birthday to Angela, Brent, & Mia! Happy 43rd Anniversary to Dwight & Colleen!

No Walking Today

I spent the time finishing off the PowerPoint presentation about Dad for the event tomorrow honoring Dad at Maunalani; they are honoring all their veterans while they are still alive. Once again, I have broken the rule about how long your PowerPoint presentation should be; its got over 200 slides & at 10 seconds each it is about 35 minutes long. Here are some of the photos I used. We're also taking in one of the big fishing poles that he made along with one of the reels he used, a fiberglass bait box that he made, and a rod holder and bell that I think our cousin Lem made.

Lunch today was Oriental shoyu chicken, Steamed rice, Mixed vegetables, Tossed salad, Peanut butter bar, & Chicken gumbo soup. Dad at half of his half sandwich & half of the peanut butter bar, which they would count as 50%, plus all his liquid supplements. Angie said last night he ate his half an egg salad sandwich, too!

Walking today would have meant getting very wet. I think it rained most of the day; like real rain, not just a drizzle. But with the rash guard and the hair dryer at least my top would be dry; I had a pair of cotton shorts with a cotton lining that would have stayed pretty wet. I will need to plan ahead for my clothing for when the weather gets more reliably wet.

Happy Birthday to Mimi, Bill, & Yvonne!
